Instrumental in the setup of the new colony was Darren Swift - a medic loosely associated with the Nexus, though not sharing many of their hardline ideals. He spearheaded the research which led to the colony developing its own cure for the bioweapon, helped to organise the initial farming efforts away from the prison (once the Creed had consolidated their power in the prison proper), and acted as an independent healer, treating those from either side who came to help.

While he continued with the cannibalism that had got him arrested in the first place, it seems that most residents eventually came to tolerate this - or at least to hide their uneasiness so long as he only took from the willing.

“Look, I know you don't want treating by one of the soulless machines, but he's better than any of our doctors. We can't sort you out here, so we send you on to him. Hell, he trained most of our medics. He's trustworthy - won't try and put cybernetics into you like those Nexus folk he hangs around, happy to use straightforward prosthetics. Just… Don't ask what happens to the bits he needs to cut off alright? He'll get you sorted out.”
