“The origins of the trend of 'Extreme Cybernetics' can be traced back to prisoners during the War, around 650PE. Perhaps the earliest example is the Legs originally belonging to Ai Lah En Rizh, of the infamous Exagora-B Prison colony. While these have exchanged hands a number of times, they were originally designed and implemented by Ai Lah during their time in the facility, utilising the limited resources afforded to them with their excellent skills as a technician to incrementally upgrade their limbs to extraordinary proportions and abilities not previously considered by the cybernetics community. While reports of the incidents on Exagora-B have been unclear at best, there can be no doubt that Ai Lah and their legs would have played a crucial role in the events there.
A number of imitators soon sprung up in the years after the prisoners had left Exagora-B, although it is widely believed that the legs were no longer in the possession of Ai Lah at this point. The movement has slowly grown in the intervening years, and while some more traditionalist medical practitioners argue that the fad is unsafe, there have been almost no reports of incidents or injuries as a direct result of the number of components people used.
Despite Ai Lah's 'original' legs having been used by a number of individuals, the nature of cybernetics means that they are still in reasonable condition today. Recognised as a collectors item by some of the bigger enthusiasts of the industry, we are very fortunate to have had the legs donated to the university to allow us to study these remarkable pieces of history.”
