Until their arrest, Yuri Tanaka was an up-and-coming civil servant at the Board of Directed Truth, Network Oversight Department. Supplementing a civil service salary with side interests is nothing unremarkable, and their small business, selling ornamental plants to off-world gardeners, attracted little attention for years - until an investigation discovered a long chain of carefully-concealed fraud and tax evasion. Tanaka was arrested, their assets seized, and they themselves shipped off to Redemption.

Since arriving at the facility, Tanaka has proved a model inmate: helpful, hard-working, and clearly trying to do their best to work off the stain on their reputation. While they regularly associate with members of the [[:patriots|True Elysians]], they do not tend to participate in their more disruptive activities.
